The same analytical failures that plagued command decisions in 1940, 1950, and 1968 keep surfacing in current strategic debates. Different actors, same cognitive traps. Here's where the pattern is showing up now, mapped against what the historical record actually teaches.


1. Mistaking documented shortcomings for categorical incapacity

The most persistent error in military assessment: cataloguing an adversary's weaknesses while discounting the capabilities built specifically to compensate for them.

A recent War on the Rocks analysis makes this point about current PLA assessments — that genuine shortcomings (limited combat experience, political character of the officer corps, institutional dysfunction) are being weighted more heavily than the infrastructure China has actually constructed: modified civilian ferries capable of launching amphibious armored vehicles, specialized port-bypass equipment, hardened air bases, and expanded missile forces. The analytical problem, as the piece frames it, is that uncertainty about whether an adversary would succeed is not the same as confidence that it could not.

The historical parallel is exact. In the winter of 1941–42, Allied assessments of Japanese naval aviation consistently emphasized what Japanese pilots lacked — instrument training, night capability, experience against modern opponents — while underweighting what they had actually demonstrated at Taranto and in exercises. The result was a command posture calibrated to a threat that didn't exist rather than the one that did.

The discipline required: assess capabilities as built, not as theorized. Shortcomings matter, but only relative to what the adversary has done to work around them.


2. Professional military education still optimized for the last war's intellectual framework

Marine Corps University's current reform effort — shifting toward classified, all-domain curriculum with AI integration and advanced wargaming — is a direct acknowledgment that PME has been producing officers fluent in Thucydides and the Overland Campaign while the battlefield moved to contested electromagnetic spectrum and drone-enabled fires.

This is not a new problem. The interwar period produced the same tension. The U.S. Army War College in the 1930s was still running seminars organized around the lessons of 1918 when the Wehrmacht was developing the combined-arms doctrine that would render those lessons obsolete. The officers who adapted fastest at the operational level — Patton, Ridgway — tended to be those who had done serious technical study outside the formal curriculum, not through it.

The question the Marine Corps reform raises, and doesn't yet answer: whether institutional education can actually produce adaptive thinkers, or whether it can only produce technically current ones. Those are different outputs.


3. Logistics vulnerability treated as a planning footnote rather than a campaign-defining constraint

The "contested logistics" problem in a Pacific scenario — sustaining a dispersed force under fire without stable communications or secure supply lines — is structurally identical to problems that decided campaigns in the 20th century. The Wehrmacht's culmination on the Eastern Front. The U.S. logistics tail in Korea that made the Chosin breakout as much a supply crisis as a tactical one. The Marine Corps in the Pacific managing fuel and ammunition across island chains under air threat.

What's changed is the threat to the supply line itself. In previous conflicts, the vulnerability was interdiction at the depot or the port. The current problem, as the analysis frames it, is the "last unmanned mile" — the final delivery to dispersed units under direct threat. Autonomy and predictive resupply are proposed solutions, but the underlying constraint is unchanged: armies culminate when they can't be fed, fueled, or rearmed, and that constraint doesn't yield to technological optimism.


4. Naval decline arriving by increments until it becomes irreversible

The Royal Navy's trajectory since 1945 — Suez 1956, East of Suez 1966, the Nott Review 1981, the 2010 carrier-without-aircraft moment — is a case study in how institutional decline works. Each individual decision was defensible on its own terms. The cumulative effect was a fleet that can no longer sustain global commitments.

The analytical lesson isn't about Britain specifically. It's about how militaries and governments process capability reduction: as a series of discrete, locally rational choices rather than as a trajectory with a destination. By the time the destination is visible, the industrial capacity and institutional knowledge to reverse course have often already been lost.
