The Hormuz Squeeze Is the Grid's Best Argument


Brent crude hit $91.42 a barrel on Monday morning — its highest since June 11 — before pulling back after Iran's foreign ministry signaled openness to negotiations. WTI touched $85.39 in the same session. Two oil tankers were immobilized in the strait over the weekend. Four vessels made the full Hormuz transit on Sunday, down from eight the day before. The shipping recovery, as ANZ analysts put it bluntly, "has effectively stalled."

This is the third time in two months we've watched Brent whipsaw on Hormuz headlines. And every time it happens, the civilizational argument for electrification gets stronger — not as a talking point, but as a hard infrastructure logic that the oil market keeps proving for us.

Backwardation Is the Market Telling You Something

When Brent's six-month spread jumped to $8.92 a barrel on July 14 — its largest premium for prompt delivery since June 10 — the market flipped from contango back into backwardation in a matter of days. That's not noise. Saxo Bank's head of commodity strategy Ole Hansen called it plainly: "The return to backwardation signals that the market expects crude availability to remain constrained in the weeks ahead."

The structural picture: in early July, recovering Hormuz exports had pushed Brent into contango — ample near-term supply, calm market. Then U.S.-Iran tensions escalated again, strikes resumed, tanker traffic collapsed, and the spread inverted. Sparta Commodities' Neil Crosby noted that flows out of Hormuz were slowing in ways that "could impact the physical market incrementally over the coming weeks if disruptions persist."

Meanwhile, Bloomberg reported that money markets priced in roughly 50% odds of a Federal Reserve rate hike in July as oil-driven inflation concerns resurfaced. Stocks and bonds fell together. This is what energy insecurity looks like when it escapes the commodity markets and starts repricing everything else.

Every civilization that runs on oil is one strait, one escalation, one weekend of tanker explosions away from this. That's the system we're defending when we delay electrification.

The Demand Signal Doesn't Care About Geopolitics

Here's the thing: while Brent was swinging 10% in a week, the electricity demand story kept compounding quietly underneath it.

The IEA's Electricity 2026 report projects global electricity demand growing at an average annual rate of 3.6% through 2030 — 50% faster than the average of the previous decade. For the first time in three decades, electricity demand outpaced economic growth in 2024. That's a structural break, not a blip.

On the supply side, Bank of America analysts project the U.S. will need more than 230 GW of new generating capacity over the next five years, driven partly by data centers that could add roughly 125 GW of load on their own. Regulated utilities are expected to add only about 93 GW of accredited supply — leaving a gap of more than 100 GW. Large gas turbines are largely sold out through 2030. Utilities have revised demand forecasts upward in each of the past three years as AI-related electricity demand materialized faster than expected.

And PJM's latest capacity auction — covering the year starting June 2028 — tied a $16.4 billion record set in late 2025, with data centers accounting for roughly $6.3 billion of that total, according to Monitoring Analytics president Joseph Bowring. AI demand bumped supply costs for the largest U.S. grid by more than 60%.

The electricity system is being pulled forward by forces that don't negotiate with geopolitics. Oil has to. That asymmetry is the whole argument.

What the Strait Actually Accelerates

I've written before about how the Hormuz closure earlier this year gave the energy transition a decade of tailwind. What's different now is that the instability isn't resolving — it's oscillating. Contango to backwardation and back again in weeks. Tanker counts swinging from eight transits to four overnight. Diplomatic signals that reverse oil prices intraday.

That volatility is a tax on every economy still running on oil. It's a tax on planning, on capital allocation, on inflation expectations. The Fed is now pricing rate hikes because of tanker traffic in the Persian Gulf. That's the system working exactly as designed — and it's a design that should offend anyone who thinks civilization should be more robust than that.

FERC's July 16 meeting directed NERC to develop new reliability standards for computational load integration by December 31, 2026. That's the regulatory system catching up to the demand reality. It's not fast enough — it never is — but it's directionally correct.

The Hormuz squeeze won't end the oil era this week. But every oscillation makes the case louder: the grid is the only energy infrastructure that doesn't have a chokepoint in the Persian Gulf.
