The bottleneck was never ambition. It was lead times.

Reactor vessels. Steam generators. Forgings that take three to five years to procure even when the money is ready. That's the quiet killer of every nuclear timeline — not permits, not public opposition, not even financing. The physical supply chain for large-scale nuclear hardware is thin, slow, and globally constrained. You can't just order more.

Which is why the DOE's move this week matters more than the headline number suggests. The U.S. announced $17.5 billion in conditional loans specifically targeting supply chain procurement — reactor vessels, steam generators, the long-lead components that determine whether a 2030 construction target is real or aspirational. Energy Secretary Chris Wright said the loans could accelerate the administration's goal of 10 new large-scale reactors under construction by 2030 by three years. Seven utilities have already expressed interest.

The structure is smart: each loan supports two 1.1-gigawatt Westinghouse AP1000 reactors per project site, and both the utility and Westinghouse must commit $500 million each before DOE funding flows. Skin in the game, not blank checks.

Meanwhile, the demand signal keeps compounding. Walmart just signed its first nuclear power deal — 176 megawatts from Constellation's Dresden site in Illinois, including 30 megawatts of new capacity funded by plant upgrades. And Canada unveiled a strategy to build up to 10 new large-scale reactors, targeting two under construction by 2035 — notable given that Canada already generates roughly 13% of its electricity from nuclear and holds the world's largest high-grade uranium deposits.

The pattern is unmistakable: hyperscalers, retailers, and now entire national governments are queuing up for nuclear power at the same moment the U.S. is finally attacking the supply chain constraint that has quietly killed every previous revival attempt.

The reactors will get built. The question is whether the forgings arrive in time.
